ANTIOXIDANT AND ANTILIPOPEROXIDANT ACTIVITIES OF ALKALOID AND PHENOLIC EXTRACTS OF EIGHT FUMARIA SPECIES
Antioxidant and antilipoperoxidant activities of alkaloid and phenolic extracts from Fumaria agraria, F. capreolata, F. densiflora, F. muralis, F. officinalis, F. parviflora, F. spicata and F. vaillantii, and of the alkaloids protopine, fumarophycine, Omethylfumarophycine, and caffeic and protocatechuic acids were studied.
In rat mitochondrial membranes all alkaloid extracts showed higher antioxidant activity against tBH-induced lipoperoxidation than the phenolic extracts.
On the other hand, the phenolic extracts from Fumaria were 2–3 fold more effective as scavengers of 1,1-diphenyl–2-picrylhydrazyl radical than the alkaloid extracts.
Fumarophycine and caffeic acid were the most active from the studied individual alkaloids and acids.
