DEVELOPMENT AND PHYSIOLOGICAL STATUS OF MICROPROPAGATED STRAWBERRY PLANTS ROOTED EX VITRO AND PLANTED TO DIFFERENT SUBSTRATES

B. Borkowska
An efficient and reproducible system of ex vitro rhizogenesis (non-sterile) has been developed for strawberries (Fragaria x ananassa Duch). Multiple shoots were induced according to the method described by Boxus (1974). The shoots obtained during the last multiplication cycle were treated as soft cuttings. The morphological and physiological status of shoots depends on type of sugar added to the medium of the final subculture. Glucose was depleted nearly completely whereas sucrose was only partly utilised. Biomass production and shoot formation were efficient in the presence of glucose. The capacity of shoots obtained from a glucose containing medium to form roots and their photosynthetic activity was higher than shoots from sucrose medium. Rockwool was an excellent substrate for rooting and further growth of strawberry plants.
