HEAT TRANSFER IN AIR CARGO UNIT LOAD DEVICES
The objective of this study was to develop mathematical model to simulate three-dimensional transient heat transfer within air cargo Unit Load Device. The Unit Load Device packaging material, thermal properties of bulk products, heat of respiration of products, void fraction and loading arrangement were included in the model. Heat transfer coefficient due to solar radiation and wind was determined from beam and diffuse radiation, geographical latitude and longitude, elevation above sea level, solar hour angle, solar declination, solar azimuth, wall azimuth and inclination, sky point of cloudiness, optical and thermal properties of material Unit Load Device, wind speed and direction. Simulation results using the model showed that heat flux through Unit Load Device walls due to solar radiation largely influenced temperature distribution in the Unit Load Device during airport operations on a typical sunny day. Temperature rise up to 10°C may occur during ground operation. This may have implications for quality and safety of shipped products.
