Although the olive (Olea europaea) is one of the oldest horticultural plants modern science for its development was limited. Until the beginning of the 20th century research was either of botanical systematic or practical horticultural nature. The traditional olive growing made utilization of new approaches most difficult. Advanced research started first in regions with a young olive industry.
