"PIANTONE DI MOGLIANO": AN INTERESTING OLIVE VARIETY WITH MODERATE GROWTH SUITABLE FOR INTENSIVE CULTIVATION

B. Alfei, A. Santinelli, G. Pannelli
The local olive variety of the Marches, “Piantone di Mogliano”, was studied in its area of origin and in different environments in the region, in order to evaluate its agronomical behaviour in comparison with the traditional cv Leccino. The variety seems to meet the requirements of an intensive planting system with fully mechanised harvesting because of its moderate growth and early and abundant production, while maintaining the best compositional and sensorial characteristics of the oil. Due to good cold tolerance, the cultivar can also be planted in marginal areas.
