STUDIES OF TECHNOLOGICAL ELEMENTS OF AUTUMN TOMATO CROP IN GREENHOUSES

At present in the Soviet Union a new agricultural branch - industry greenhouse vegetable growing receives wide development. Large greenhouse complexes — (12—54 ha) are building near towns and industry centres all over the country. In the central regions the greenhouses are used during the whole year, growing vegetable crops in two turns.

During winter spring time the main crop is cucumber, and during autumn — tomato.

5—6 year ago autumn tomato crop was considered as less productive (3—4 kg per m2 was received) and not profitable one.

One of the tasks raised in our Department of Protected Ground of Scientific Research Institute of Vegetable Horticulture (in “Moskovsky” - state farm) was the working out of technology of autumn tomato crop providing 8—9 kg per m2.

With this end in view during 1971—75 a number of trials was carried out for studying the main elements of growing technology of the autumn tomatoes: choosing of variety, growing seedlings conditions, terms of planting, planting diagrams and nutrition area, methods of plant formation, influence of cluster vibration, rate-setting of clusters, etc.

For choosing more perspective tomato varieties and for autumn cropping hybrids we checked in collections and comparable variety tests more than 200 samples from different countries. Main requirements to the variety are: high yield, immunity, fruit quality.

The best results of the yield showed the hybrids Revermun, Adagio, Extase (Holland), Immuna (Sweden), Pagham Cross (England), the home selections — Moskovsky oseny (VNIISSOK), Leningradsky oseny (VIR) and hybrid 13 TSHA.
