AGRONOMIC VALUE AND COLD-KEEPING OF EGG-PLANT (SOLANUM MELONGENA L) VARITIES AND HYBRIDS
The suitability to the cold-keeping has been evaluated maintaining the fruits at 6° and 10°C in open boxes or in holed polyethylene bags. The percentage of weight loss, shrivelling, chilling injuries and firmness were observed after 15 or 20 days.
Among the round types the hybrids overcome the varieties for yield and related characters; among the elongated ones the ISPORT hybrids are on the overage earlier than the other types under experiment, with the exception of Shirma and Nice that are the earliest. However the yield of these two hybrids drop out drastically at the foruth and fifth picks; in addition their berries are not well accepted by the market. The ISPORT hybrids of special interest are 30–71, 23–71, 31–71, 106–74, 104–74, and 54–71 for marketable and total yield; 31–71 for the mean number of fruit per plant; 21–71, 23–71, 104–74, 19–71, 106–74 for the earliness and 106–74, 30–71 for the mean weight of the fruits. The suitable types for the cold storage are the ISPORT 54–71, 31–71, 105–74 and the italian variety Canellina Sarnese 101–69. The best conditions of cold storage was at a temperature of 10°C and wrapping in polyethylene bags.
This study emphasizes the role of the new ISPORT hybrids someone of which represents a real advancement on the breeding of this plant.
