EFFECT OF DIFFERENT PROPAGATION METHODS ON GROWTH OF PLUM AND SOUR CHERRY CULTIVARS

The experiment was established at the Polli Horticultural Institute in 1998. The aim of the trial was to compare the effect of different propagation methods on the growth of plum and cherry cultivars. The plant material for propagation in vitro and for grafting was taken from the same mother-tree. Four plum cultivars of European origin (‘Emma Leppermann’, ‘Wilhelmine Späth’, ‘Duke of Edinburgh’ and ‘Queen Victoria’) and five local cultivars (‘Polli Munaploom’, ‘Liivi Kollane Munaploom’, ‘Noarootsi Punane’, ‘Vilnor’ and ‘Märjamaa’) were used in trials. The plum cultivars were grafted on Prunus cerasifera seedlings. Also three cherry cultivars (‘Kampesur’, ‘Läti-Leedu Madalkirss’ and ‘Nõmme Liivakirss’) were used in trials. The cherry cultivars were grafted on Prunus mahaleb seedlings. The trunk diameter was measured yearly and the TCSA was calculated. It was found that all the cherry cultivars studied, when propagated in vitro, showed a greater TCSA than cultivars propagated in the usual way. Plums showed no significant effect of the propagation method to TCSA. However a significant co-effect between propagation methods and cultivars was observed. In the 2nd and 3rd year after planting the measurements of the length of one-year-old shoots found there were significantly more short shoots (up to 10 cm) in in vitro propagated plum trees. Also in cherries, significantly more short shoots in in vitro propagated trees were observed in the 3rd year whereas the grafted cherry trees showed many more medium shoots (10-100 cm) in the 3rd year.
