EVALUATION OF SCAB AND MILDEW RESISTANCE IN LOCAL APPLE CULTIVARS IN NORWAY

D. Røen, S.N. Moe, L. Nornes
A total of 35 local apple cultivars from Norway were evaluated for resistance to apple scab (Venturia inaequalis) and powdery mildew (Podosphaera leucotricha) in the greenhouse and nursery. No sporulating scab was recorded on leaves of the local cultivars ‘Gravenstein Fusa’ and ‘Kviteple’ or on the control cultivars ‘Discovery’ and ‘Priam’ in either the greenhouse or the nursery. Scab was observed on fruits of ‘Discovery’ in the nursery. On 4 other local cultivars (‘Martaeple’, ‘Furuholm’, ‘Leiknes’ and ‘Ørekrok’) and on the control NY 18491, no sporulating scab was found in the greenhouse, but occasional scab lesions were recorded on leaves in the nursery. Mildew was observed on all cultivars in the nursery, but several local cultivars had a very low level (as with ‘Discovery’).
