EXPERIENCES WITH DWARFING SWEET CHERRY ROOTSTOCKS IN NORTHERN GERMANY
Analysis of recent results from the national German sweet cherry rootstock trial (planted in 1989 with 22 rootstock genotypes) has confirmed previously-reported preliminary results.
With 'Regina', the best yields per tree were on Weiroot 158, Gisela® 3 (Gi 209/1, bred at Giessen and selected at Ahrensburg), and Gisela 5, the latter of which has been recommended since 1998 to growers for commercial production in Northern Germany.
Yield per tree volume was best with Gisela® 3 and Gisela® 10, and also good with Gisela® 5 and Gisela® 4. Gisela® 3 is very interesting for high density systems under rain cover protection, but needs further investigation.
In a younger trial (begun 1995) with 'Regina', thus far Gisela® 5 has had the best cumulative yields, compared to Weiroot 13, Weiroot 53, Weiroot 154, Weiroot 158, mazzard and Colt. Another trial (begun 1996) compared 4 cultivars ('Viola', 'Oktavia', 'Regina' and 'Kordia') on Colt and Gisela® 5, which showed that all cultivars on Gisela® 5 produced smaller trees, but better yields/tree, than did Colt. With some cultivars in this plot, additional results have been documented with Gisela® 6, Weiroot 53, Weiroot 158, Gi 318/17, Piku® 1 (PiKu 4.20) and Piku® 3 (Pi-Ku 4.83), the latter two rootstocks from Dresden-Pillnitz. Finally, preliminary vegetative growth data have been compiled from an additional trial (begun 1998) of several cultivars on the Czech rootstocks PHL-A and PHL-B, as well as on the PiKu series, mazzard, Colt and Gisela® 5, which were planted in 1998.
