INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION ON PLANT VIRUS RESEARCH WITH SPECIAL REGARD TO FRUIT TREE VIRUSES

H. Rønde Kristensen
It has been stated that it would seems necessary to treble the production of food in the next generation, if mankind is not to suffer from starvation in a even more catastrophic way than to day.

Here much can be done in the field of plant protection, and the virologists certainly have a great responsibility in this respect.

As you all are aware, plant protection is not solely a matter of the individual country, on the contrary, a world wide struggle against plant diseases and pests can only be effectively performed, in so far all nations are prepared to cooperate.

Such co-operation have certainly taken place for several years, and I shall now briefly describe some of the international work carried out with special emphasis on plant viruses. In doing so I would like to divide this work into two parts, firstly some of the work carried out on more or less compulsory basis, and secondly the work performed on voluntary basis.
