NUTRIENT AND WATER MANAGEMENT IN GUAVA

Among the various factors which affect the production and productivity of guava, nutrient and water assume much more significance. These two inputs are essentially required to be managed in a manner, which provides maximum output. Inadequacy of one or other nutrients at critical stage of fruit development, adversely affect the productivity and quality of produce. Therefore, it is required that these inputs are effectively managed. In guava, efficient management of nutrients and water is essential to have targeted yield and quality of fruits. Response of guava is reported to NPK and application of Ca, Mg, Zn, Bo is also observed to be essential in given situation. Soil nutrient status is not a guide to nutritional monitoring, thus leaf nutrient standard is considered to be related with yield and quality. A sampling of two month old pair of leaves on fruiting terminal is appropriate for nutrient diagnosis. Leaf nutrient standards have been provided, but would need refinement to use it as a tool for effective management of nutrients. Time of nutrient application and package for organic farming is required to be developed. Drip irrigation would prove to be the best system for irrigation, not only to save water and nutrients, but also to get desired quality of fruits and needs appropriate attention.
