Molecular identification by ISSR markers was used for fingerprinting five early season cultivars of loquat (Eriobotrya japonica Lindl.): ‘Xichang Zaoshu’, ‘Zaozhong No.6’, ‘Hunan Zaoshu’ (a sample from Hunan and another from Chongqing) and ‘Xingning No. 1’. The DNA fingerprints of the loquat cultivars were obtained using 15 primers. Results indicated that primers 844, 845 and 846 gave a specific band for ‘Hunan Zaoshu’ from Hunan, the fingerprints of the other cultivars did not show any difference. According to the results, ‘Xichang Zaoshu’, ‘Zaozhong No.6’, ‘Hunan Zaoshu’ from Chongqing and ‘Xingning No.1’ might be the same cultivar. Differences in traits among them should come from environmental conditions.
