An experiment was designed to study fruit variation of loquat (Eriobotrya japonica Lindl. cv. ‘Jiefangzhong’ irradiated with 60Co γ ray. Gamma rays induced favorable and unfavorable variants. Shoots had a strong sensitivity to γ ray irradiation and the mutagenesis effect was significant. The various mutants followed a normal distribution, suggesting irradiation is useful method to improve fruit quality; some favorable mutations could be used directly as breeding material.
