Morphological characters, yield attributes, nutritional status and isoenzyme profiles of elite genotypes of taro [Colocasia esculenta (L.) Schott var. antiquorum] were studied in the University Horticultural Research Station during 2004-2005 for evaluation of their performance, nutrient contents and identification of Phytophthora tolerant types. The significant differences in the plant growth characters like length and girth of main sucker, number of side suckers/plant, number of petioles/clump, petiole length, length and breadth of leaf lamina were observed among the taro genotypes. The average length and girth of main sucker ranged between 66.3-84.7 cm and 12.1-18.1 cm respectively. Similarly significant variations in yield and yield attributing characters like average weight, length and girth of cormel, number and weight of cormel/plant were recorded among the different genotypes. Average yield varied from 10.1-14.9 t/ha. High yield potential was observed in BCC-16, BCC-24, BCC-32 and BCC-1. The genotypes with high length:breadth ratio of leaf lamina were generally showed resistance to blight disease. Dry matter and starch (dry weight basis) content of the tubers varied within the cultivars and ranged between 23.2-29.2% and 29.5-457%, respectively. Electrophoretic analysis of isozymes of these genotypes showed marked variation in band pattern of isoforms in healthy and Phytophthora infected plants. The field resistant genotypes to Phytophthora blight showed a few additional bands of peroxidase (PO) whereas, susceptible genotypes to blight disease were lacking in that isoforms and in the highly susceptible genotypes both the common and additional bands of peroxidase were absent. High PO and low polyphenol oxidase activity (PPO) was found in the resistant genotypes.
