EXPERIENCES WITH RECENT POSTHARVEST TECHNOLOGIES IN KIWIFRUIT

N. Lallu, J. Burdon
Recent postharvest technologies available to the kiwifruit industry include near infra red spectroscopy, HarvestWatch™ and SmartFreshSM. In this paper, the use of these technologies within the New Zealand industry is discussed and some data from laboratory, semi-commercial and commercial trials are presented. The emphasis is in how well the biology of kiwifruit, or relevant biological process within kiwifruit, is matched to the technology. It is concluded that the biology of kiwifruit and SmartFreshSM or HarvestWatch™ are reasonably well matched and therefore it appears that SmartFreshSM and HarvestWatch™ can be appropriate technologies for the kiwifruit industry.
