FERTIGATION OF PROCESSING TOMATO IN SIDI BOUZID REGION (TUNISIA)

A. Boujelben, C. Hannachi, Y. Mnasri, T. Jlali
Sidi Bouzid region is one of the most important production regions of fresh tomatoes processed in Tunisia. Actually, cultivated area reached 2650 ha with total production of 90000 t/year. Farmers used surface irrigation to grow tomato plants. Since 1995, farmers introduced drip irrigation system on tomato crop without knowledge of fertigation. To help farmers to improve yields, field experimental trial was conducted in Sidi Bouzid area (Gammouda) using twin lines crop irrigated by incorporated drippers of 4 L/h discharges. A special fertigation program has been applied to improve yields and saving irrigation water. The results show high improvement of plant growth and water saving. Daily drip irrigation helped tomato crop to resist at highest summer temperature (sirocco) and improved yield that reached 114 t/ha.
