MAKE CONSISTENT IRRIGATION WITH TREATED WASTE WATER, WATER SAVING AND HIGH QUALITY FOOD PRODUCTION: THE EU PROJECT SAFIR
The European project SAFIR (Safe and High Quality Food Production using Low Quality Waters and Improved Irrigation Systems and Management, www.safir4eu.org, is mainly focused on allowing a safe use of treated wastewater or low quality water for irrigation purposes.
At the same time new technologies will be developed to support the reuse of water applying a mild water treatment in situ and to increase the water use efficiency by means of a new irrigation strategy (Partial Root Drying PRD) and the use of precise management tools (DSS). In this paper the project structure, expected results and strategic relevance for the processing tomato will be presented and discussed.
