Anoectochilus formosanus Hayata, named “Jewel Orchids” by its attractive foliage, is an important medicinal herb in Taiwan. A. formosanus has been widely used in Taiwan for treating many diseases such as diabetes, high blood pressure and tumors. Because of the high value of this medicinal herb, a great shortage in supply was due to over-harvest of the naturally-grown plants. Instead of taking from wild plants, commercial cultivation of A. formosanus has been established for fulfilling the great market demand. A review of serial development of A. formosanus production in Taiwan will be presented in (1) synchronous flowering to resolve the optimum period for cross-pollination and fruit set; and in vitro germination test of capsules at various stages of maturity; developing an asymbiotic germination condition for seeds (2) In vitro micropropagation of A. formosanus by shoot tip and/or nodal explants (3) commercial cultivation of A. formosanus and (4) the recent developments on chemical and pharmacological studies of A. formosanus.
