EVALUATION OF FRUIT SET AND FRUIT DEVELOPMENT OF NEW JAPANESE PARTHENOCARPIC EGGPLANT LINES

New parthenocarpic eggplant lines (‘AE-P’ and ‘Nasu Anou Kou’ lines) that bear fruit of favorable quality according to Japanese preferences were bred by hybridizing a European parthenocarpic cultivar (‘Talina’) with pseudo-parthenocarpic Japanese lines (‘Nakate Shinkuro’ or ‘Nasu Chuukanbohon Nou 1’). We evaluated their fruit set and development characteristics under greenhouse and growth chamber conditions in comparison with the parent lines (‘Talina2/1’, a parthenocarpic double-haploid line of ‘Talina’, and ‘Nakate Shinkuro’) and with two other lines (‘Senryo Nigou’ and ‘LS1934’). All of the new parthenocarpic lines produced a higher normal fruit set than the other lines. The normal fruit set of ‘Talina2/1’ was lower than that of the new lines, indicating that the fruit set of ‘Talina’ is not high, even though it is able to produce normal fruit without pollination. The normal fruit set of ‘Nakate Shinkuro’ was higher than that of ‘Talina2/1’ but lower than those of the new parthenocarpic lines. Japanese eggplant cultivars such as ‘Nakate Shinkuro’ exhibit pseudo-parthenocarpy, with fruit set or the growth of ovaries beginning at flowering, but non-pollinated fruits stop enlarging at a small size early during their growth. The high normal fruit sets of the new parthenocarpic lines may have resulted from the introduction of pseudo-parthenocarpy, and this, combined with parthenocarpy, contributed to their high normal fruit sets. Therefore, these lines will be important in the development of new eggplant lines with high normal fruit set.
