SOCIO-ECONOMIC IMPACT OF THE AUTONOMOUS FARMER AGRICULTURAL AND VILLAGE TRAINING CENTRE ON IMPROVING INCOME AND QUALITY OF STRING BEANS IN CIBODAS VILLAGE, LEMBANG

R. Rivana, Y. Deliana
String bean has much economic potential since the market demand is high in both local and export markets. However, this market opportunity is eluding many farmers because they lack the skills to grow string bean intensively. Cibodas village is one of the string bean commodity centres in West Java. The Autonomous Farmer Agricultural and Village Training Centre (P4S) (Pusat pelatihan Pertanian dan Pedesaan Swadaya), has provided training, not only in agronomic practices, but also marketing and management. The objective of this research is to identify the socio-economic impact of the P4S on string bean farmers who grow for export. A survey was carried out from May to November 2006. The results show that there was a difference in income between P4S farmers and non P4S farmers. The P4S farmers who included quality control achieved a revenue/cost ratio of 1.59 while those P4S farmers without quality control achieved a revenue/cost ratio of 1.32. The non P4S farmers with quality control achieved a revenue/cost ratio of 1.14, while the non P4S farmers without quality control achieved a revenue/cost ratio of only 1.08. The social impact of the P4S included: (1) a guaranteed market and a higher price; (2) more bargaining power; (3) more assistance in developing other commodities such as hydroponic tomato and other exotic vegetables such as zuccini, horenzo and kobucai; and (4) a stronger farmer organisation that had the support of the community and Government to run training programs for other farmers.
