FRAGARIA ITURUPENSIS: A NEW SOURCE FOR STRAWBERRY IMPROVEMENT?
Fragaria iturupensis, a new strawberry species from the island of Iturup, Kurils, was first described by Staudt in 1973 and was recollected in 2005. The value of this only octoploid species occurring outside of the Americas for breeding cultivated strawberries was investigated by cross combination with Fragaria ×ananassa. F1 and parent species were examined for fertility, resistance to common diseases and aroma volatiles.
