CULTIVAR/ROOTSTOCKS AND ENVIRONMENTS AS POTENTIAL FACTORS FOR SUCCESSFUL APRICOT GROWING
World apricot production is much 1ess than it could be, in view of the favourable geographic and climate conditions and the level of agricultural practice which exists in many areas. The main reason for this low production in countries with more or less favourable conditions for the expansion of apricot growing is related to the scientific and technical problems of apricot decline, also known as apricot apoplexy, sudden wilt or dieback. But, after the mutual assistance or research workers from different disciplines in investigation of this complex disease, the economic security of apricot growing can be improved and apricot decline reduced to an acceptable level. Special attention must be paid to causes of uneven apricot production, causes of apricot decline: low and fluctuating temperature during the autumn and obligatory rest period, bacteria Pseudomones syringae Van Hall, fungi Cytospora cinota Sacc and Eutypa armeniacea (impf. Cytosporina) Hansf. and Carter., incomplete Compatibility and full incompatibility between apricot and rootstock and other important diseases, as well as on measures for more successful and secure apricot growing: selecting location and s1te. apricot cvs, rootstocks and inter-rootstocks, planting density, soils, nutritional status, soil management, training, pruning and fruit thinning.
