PERFORMANCE OF 'ERUNOSID' AND 'WALA' – NEW POLISH SEEDLING ROOTSTOCKS FOR PLUM AND PRUNE TREES

M. Sitarek, Z.S. Grzyb, J. Lis
The influence of four seedling rootstocks: P. cerasifera var. divaricata Borkh., ‘Wangenheim Prune’ (P. domestica L.), ‘Erunosid’ (P. domestica L.) and ‘Wala’ (P. domestica L.) on the growth, yields and fruit weight of ‘Herman’, ‘Cacanska Rana’ and ‘Oneida’ plum trees was investigated. The field experiment was carried out on a heavy, loamy soil at the Experimental Station in Lipowa (southern Poland) from 1996 to 2006. The trees grafted on P. divaricata seedlings were regarded as the control combination. In comparison with the control, ‘Erunosid’, ‘Wala’ and ‘Wangenheim Prune’ seedlings significantly reduced the growth of all the plum trees. The dwarfing effect of these rootstocks was most evident in the case of the ‘Cacanska Rana’ plum trees and ranged from 23 to 39%. Among the rootstocks tested, the ‘Wangenheim Prune’ seedlings had the lowest vigour. However, no significant differences in trunk thickness among the trees grafted on ‘Erunosid’, ‘Wala’ and ‘Wangenheim Prune’ were found. The cumulative yields of ‘Herman’, ‘Cacanska Rana’ and ‘Oneida’ plum trees were affected by the rootstocks. The trees grafted on P. divaricata seedlings produced higher yields than those grafted on the other rootstocks evaluated. Generally, yield efficiency indexes were similar for all the trees grafted on ‘Erunosid’, ‘Wala’ and ‘Wangenheim Prune’ rootstocks and higher than the control trees. The ‘Herman’ plum trees grafted on P. divaricata seedlings produced larger fruits than the trees on the other rootstocks. The effect of rootstock type on mean fruit weight of ‘Cacanska Rana’ and ‘Oneida’ plum trees was insignificant.
