GREEN MARVEL- A 100-YEAR INTEGRATED VEGETATION STRATEGY FOR THE RED RIVER FLOODWAY

G. Manning, J. Morgan
The Red River Floodway is a 48-kilometre diversion channel constructed in the 1960’s to protect Winnipeg during Red River floods. It has saved $10 billion in property damage, and has been recognized internationally as one of the world’s greatest engineering marvels.
The Floodway currently is being widened to provide even greater flood security, and an ambitious revegetation plan has been proposed. In addition to being one of the largest native prairie restoration projects in North America, the 100-year strategy will facilitate food production, agro-forestry, forage, grazing, carbon sequestration, habitat restoration, recreation, interpretation, and economic develop¬ment. In scale, foresight, and technical challenges, the strategy if implemented will be a living complement to the engineering marvel.
