In 2007, the government of Chaoyang District, Beijing started to build a data base of the urban green space so as to set up an efficient digital management system. Based on the analysis of the resulting data, this paper makes a study on the species composition and the general characteristics of the tree population in the urban green areas. A total of 72 species/cultivars of trees categorized into 31 families, up to 670,540 individuals were recorded. This includes 61 kinds of deciduous and 11 kinds of evergreens. Among the 72 species, there are 55 quick-growing species and 9 slow-growing species. The analysis reveals landscape management problems such as low biodiversity, too high ratio of quick-growing species, etc. The collected data will be of great value not only for the new approach to urban green management, but also for the future landscape designing in the urban cities.
