BREEDING LATE-FLOWERING ALMONDS IN THE CEBAS-CSIC, MURCIA, SPAIN
The almond breeding program of CEBAS-CSIC began in 1971 and in 1985, the first crosses were carried out.
Since 1985, more than 12,000 seedlings from 350 families have been obtained.
From the beginning, self-compatibility and late flowering were the main objectives.
In 1995, the late-flowering, self-compatible cultivars Antoñeta and Marta were released.
In 1997, a new stage of the breeding program began, with the main objective of delaying flowering time as much as possible.
In 2007, the extra-late flowering, self-compatible cultivars Penta and Tardona were released.
These new cultivars flower between 20 and 30 days after Ferragnès and are adequate for areas with a very high risk of late frost. More recently, several extra-late flowering, self-compatible descendants have been selected and are being tested in commercial orchards placed in cold areas.
New early selection strategies for late flowering are being developed to increase the efficiency of the breeding program.
