BREEDING ACTIVITY WITH ACTINIDIA DELICIOSA AND ACTINIDIA CHINENSIS AT CRA-CENTRO DI RICERCA PER LA FRUTTICOLTURA: BEST PERFORMING MALE AND FEMALE SELECTIONS

The CRA-FRU research orchards contain 921 Actinidia seedlings resulting from breeding programs, 618 of A. chinensis and 303 of A. deliciosa or 455 male and 452 female vines. Since 2006, these genotypes have been evaluated for their agronomic, phenological and pomological characteristics and some of them show very interesting aspects. The main objectives of the breeding for staminate plants are related to their flowering characters: synchrony in date with female selections, high intensity of flowering, flowering over an extended period and good pollen quality. The main breeding aims for pistillate plants are: precocity in ripening period, different color of flesh than green and a more agreeable taste. The evaluation data so far collected has allowed the identification of ten female (seven A. chinensis and three A. deliciosa) and six male (three of each species) advanced selections that better met our goals. The staminate plants cover perfectly the flowering period of the female selections; the three A. chinensis selections flower from 17 to 25 of April while the three A. deliciosa selections bloom from 7 to 17 May. These pollenisers have a minimum of ten days flowering, carry a good load of flowers and their pollen germination rate is higher than 85%. Fruit ripen from 20 September to 10 of October (from 40 to 20 days earlier than ‘Hayward’); five selections are yellow-fleshed, all satisfy the most common marketing parameters and have an excellent taste.
