DEALING WITH CHANGING WORLD MARKETS FOR KIWIFRUIT

D. O'Rourke
The world markets in kiwifruit will continue to change rapidly in response to factors inside and outside the industry. These changes will require fresh thinking and new operating approaches by growers, packers, marketers, regulators, research scientists, extension and training specialists, and industry organizations. Among the more disruptive external changes will be aging demographics, economic turmoil, retail shakeouts and new concerns of consumers. Factors within the kiwifruit industry that are bringing new stresses are the need to cut costs and increase efficiency, increased experimentation with new varieties, the development of global marketing networks and the emergence of new competitors. The most effective ways to meet these challenges are discussed.
