YIELD AND IRRIGATION WATER USE EFFICIENCY FOR RIDGE- AND BED-CULTIVATED CHUFA (CYPERUS ESCULENTUS L. VAR. SATIVUS BOECK)

Chufa, also known as tiger nut, is a typical crop in the Region of Valencia (Spain). Despite being traditionally cultivated in ridges, it was recently observed that slight changes in the machinery required for its sowing and harvesting allow it to be cultivated in beds. The aim of the present study was to compare the productive response of chufa planted in ridges (R), and those planted in beds with two (B2) or three (B3) tuber lines, as well as to assess the effect of the different planting strategies on the irrigation water use efficiency and eventual water savings. The experiment was conducted over three consecutive seasons in Valencia. Distances between axes were 60, 80 and 120 cm for R, B2 and B3, respectively. The irrigation strategy was based on the volumetric soil water content (VSWC), which was continuously monitored with capacitance sensors. Plots were furrow irrigated, initiating each irrigation event when the VSWC dropped to 60% of field capacity. Results show that yield production was affected by year, planting strategy and their interaction. The greatest yields were obtained with B2 for all three seasons, while B3 produced greater yields than R in one season. None of these factors significantly affected the average tuber weight (ATW), and no differences in ATW or small tuber percentages were found between the different planting lines in beds. Considerably less irrigation water was applied in B3 (average 554 mm) than in B2 (831 mm) and R (1108 mm). Irrigation water use efficiency values were affected by the year effect, by the planting strategy and by their interaction (B2 was greater than R and lower than B3 for the three seasons). Therefore, our results have direct implications on the efficient water management of this crop.
