The poor quality of hardened and impervious soil in the urban greenbelt is caused by the rapid pace of the urbanization which does not satisfy the requirement of the contemporary city construction. Soil conditions of urban greenbelts in the nine main districts of Chongqing are investigated. Factors, such as compaction, anthropic- materials incorporation, soil structural damage, low organic content, application of chemical fertilizer and pesticides, unreasonable plant arrangement and soil microbiotic disturbances, mainly result in urban soil hardening in greenbelts. Based on the principles of landscape ecology and symbiosis science, integrative techniques are put forward to improve hardened and impervious urban soil for planting.
