EFFECTS OF PLANT GROWTH REGULATORS IN ORNAMENTAL KALE (BRASSICA OLERACEA VAR. ACEPHALA)
The ornamental kale (Brassica oleracea var. acephala) has the potential to produce ornamental potted plants because of the highly decorative foliage, characterized by intense colors of the central leaves, provided by anthocyanin. However, to obtain compacts and attractive plants it is necessary to use plant growth regulators. The aim of this experiment was to investigate the effects of application of plant growth regulators in the production of ornamental kale. The Paclobutrazol (2, 4 and 8 mg a.i. pot-1) was applied once on the substrate at 37 days after transplanting (DAT); the prohexadione-Ca (200, 400, 800 and 1600 mg L-1) was sprayed once on the leaves, at 37 DAT, plus surfactant agent; the Daminozide (one, two and three foliar concentration of 2500 mg L-1) and Chlormequat (one, two and three foliar concentration of 1000 mg L-1) were applied at 37 days after sowing (DAS) and repeated every 15 days, according to the number of sprays. In the control treatment, plants were sprayed with distilled water plus surfactant agent. The Paclobutrazol, despite reduced plant height and increase the content of anthocyanin in the pink leaves, reduced the plant diameter and the pink portion diameter. The Chlormequat showed similar values for all characteristics in comparison to the control. The Daminozide, compared to the control, reduced plant height, the plant diameter and pink portion diameter, however, did not influence the content of anthocyanin and chlorophyll in the leaves. The use of prohexadione-Ca reduced the plant height and provided a good relation between green and pink portions, being responsible, in general, to the production of plants with higher commercial value.
