EFFECTS OF TEMPERATURES, GROWING MEDIA AND SEED AGE ON GERMINATION OF DIANTHUS CALOCEPHALUS BOISS. SEEDS
The Dianthus calocephalus Boiss. is a unique species of Caryophyllaceae family, native of Turkey.
By now there is no information on characteristics of D. calocephalus seeds and its germination.
The purpose of this study was to find out the effects of temperatures, growing media and seed age on seed germination of D. calocephalus. The seeds germinated at 20, 22 and 24°C in darkness under laboratory conditions.
Optimum temperature for germination was found to be 20°C. Under greenhouse conditions, fresh and old seeds germinated in various growing media (peat, peat:perlite (1:1), perlite). Germination rate was higher in fresh seeds as compared to older ones.
The highest germination percentage was obtained in peat with 85%. The interaction between seed age and growing media was found statistically significant (P<0.01).
