AN EXPERIMENTAL METHOD TO DETERMINE THE OPTIMAL AGE OF THE PLANTS, DAYS BETWEEN APPLICATIONS AND GA3 CONCENTRATION FOR EARLY FLOWER INDUCTION ON ARTICHOKE

Nunhems is a global seed company that develops, among many other horticultural species, artichoke hybrid cultivars multiplied by seeds. Earliness is a top priority in the production of this crop, which very often requires the application of gibberellic acid (GA3) following some variety-specific parameters:
1. Age of the plant at the first application,
2. The number of days between them, and finally,
3. The right concentration of the product.
When a new variety enters the market, the optimal parameters for the application of the GA3 must be found. The classical approach to this problem requires a factorial design which size ends up being too large and therefore, costly. In order to be able to set the optimal combinations for those parameters, an alternative experimental method is proposed.
It is based on the hypothesis that the variety-specific parameters act independently. Our experience says that this is likely the case. Therefore we can have three separate experiments, one for each parameter. In each experiment two parameters have been fixed at levels which we know from experience that work reasonably well. This allows us to determine best settings for each parameter individually. A next step will be to conduct a second experiment using the best settings for all parameters to validate our initial independence hypothesis.
This method requires a very limited amount of resources and the use of one single or very few plants as experimental unit. Results from this experiment will approach to a limited range of values that later on should be confirmed in bigger trials where interactions can be analysed.
