EVALUATION OF SOME CRITICAL POINTS OF THE ASPARAGUS FOOD CHAIN IN ARGENTINA

In order to contribute to optimize, quantitatively as well as qualitatively, the productivity of this species in Argentina, and to generate its expansion, trials with 68 plots and a total area of 3021 m2 were carried out in the Experimental Unit, F.A.A.-UNCPBA (36°48’S; 59°51’W). The aim was to analyze the impact on the productive yield of some critical points corresponding to the initial stage of the crop, evaluating the productivity with different male Italian hybrids (HMI): (‘Italo’, ‘Zeno’, ‘Eros’, ‘Ercole’, ‘H668’, ‘Marte’, ‘Giove’ and American control ‘UC157’); two densities (D1: 25,000 and D2: 17,857 pl ha-1); initiation systems (STA: Traditional System of Crowns and SMP: Modern System of Seedlings) and sizes of initiation organs: G: big, M: medium and CH: small. In STA: G: >150 g; M: 100-150 g and Ch: <100 g; and SMP: G: 40, M: 60 and CH: 80 cm3 of cell respectively. The variables studied were total and net productivity (top quality) in t ha-1 (PFT and PFN), number of turions (NT), distribution of calibers (J, XL, L, M, S), average weight of turions (PPT) and % of discard. In all the cases, PTF and PFN followed a similar trend. The average hybrid was 9.2. In PFT, T surpassed HMI; ‘UC157’: 11 (a); ‘Zeno’: 10.6 (ab); ‘Ercole’: 9.7 (bc); ‘Eros’: 9.3 (c); ‘H668’: 9.3 (c); ‘Giove’: 8 (d); ‘Italo’: 8.2 (d) and ‘Marte’: 7.7 (e); differences were found in the length of turions, homogeneity, precocity and % of discard. In PPT, HMI surpassed T, producing turions with bracts more resistant to opening, lower % of discard, with the exception of ‘Zeno’. In D1, 15.4 (a) were obtained and D2:13.9 (b); whereas in NT there were no significant differences. In STA, the PFT was G: 17.2 (a); M: 14.8 (b) and CH: 11.9 (c), whereas with SMP no significant differences were observed. These results show that Argentina has a high productive potential if the necessary adjustments are performed in the most critical links of the chain when planning a crop.
