Apricot tree was not to be planted for commercial purpose until the end of 1970s or the early of 1980s when the economic reform and opening up policy was implemented in China. Since then, apricot cultivar in the production has undergone three stages as follows: 1) local cultivar selected from Chinese native apricot resources, 2) introduced improved cultivar from west countries, and 3) released new apricot cultivar based on Chinese apricot breeding program. In this paper, a brief introduction and comments of apricot cultivar evolution are given in a temporal view, and the future breeding purpose is discussed.
