STUDIES CONCERNING THE OBTAINING OF A HIGH-CLASS DIGITALIS LANATA DRUG x

In highly industrialized countries the cardiocirculatory diseases represent an important politico-economical problem, because about 10 per cent of the cases of invalidity and 40 to 50 percent of all cases of mortality are to be attributed to them. In future, an increase of these diseases and thus an increased demand for cardio-active drugs should be taken into account.

In cardiotherapy, the use of digitalis glycosides, mainly the glycosides C /digoxin and lanatoside C/ of Digitalis lanata, is preferred.

Prerequisite for the low-cost production of glycosides of the series C is the obtaining of a drug with a high and constant content of lanatoside C and content of digoxin, respectively. The high content of lanatoside C has to correlate with a high yield of green mass /about 30 tons/hectare/ and the resistance to fungus attacks.

The Digitalis lanata of different origin which was at our disposal at the beginning of our studies, did not meet these demands /table 1/.
