IDENTIFICATION OF SYNONYMS AMONG OLD HUNGARIAN APPLE CULTIVARS USING MORPHOLOGICAL AND MOLECULAR MARKERS

In old apple cultivars, one cultivar often has several different names or several cultivars have the same name. In the present study twelve SSR (simple sequence repeat) markers that produced considerable polymorphisms in previous reports were selected to verify and distinguish synonyms and cultivar groups among old Hungarian apple cultivars. To verify the relationships, the cultivars were also described on the basis of their morphological similarity. Both morphological and SSR markers revealed differences between ‘Cigány alma’ and ‘Simonffy piros’, so they can no longer be regarded as synonyms. All the Renet cultivars examined could be differentiated from each other using both types of description. As no relationship was found between the Renet cultivars, they were presumably classified in the same group based on their fruit quality.
