POSTHARVEST TREATMENT AND PACKAGING SYSTEM FOR SARAWAK'S INDIGENOUS MIDIN FERN (STENOCHLAENA PALUSTRIS)
Sarawaks wild creeper red fern, namely midin (Stenochlaena palustris), grows naturally in the secondary forests and is peculiar to the state. Its tender new fronds are widely eaten as a vegetable, famous for its crispy texture and great taste. Midin has a bright future to be introduced as a potential crop for the export market. However, fresh midin fronds can only last for 2 days after harvesting. Thus, a proper postharvest treatment and packaging system are needed to extent its shelf life. MARDI Kuching initiated studies in improvement of marketable quality of midin. The qualities of midin fronds treated with 0.2% ascorbic acid, 1% calcium chloride and hydrocooling were compared with control samples. Meanwhile, the effect of packaging systems were studied using low density polyethylene (LDPE) bags 0.12 mm, polystyrene (PS) trays wrapped with polyvinyl chloride (PVC) film and paper bags. The storage study was monitored under chilled conditions at 10ºC. Observation made was based on changes in leaf discoloration, marketable appearance, weight loss, degree of shriveling and diseases incidence. Results showed that treatment application of 0.2% ascorbic acid dipping treatment with LDPE bags will enable the storage life of midin to be extended up to 8 days.
