In the late 1970s at the Research Institute for Fruit Growing Pitesti, a programme was scheduled for obtaining vegetative rootstocks for fruit species. The main objectives focused on: low vigor, good rooting ability versus propagation methods, resistance and/ or tolerance to pests and diseases, good grafting compat-ibility with cultivars, good influence for coming into bearing, constant yielding and fruit qualities, adaptability to the wide range of Romania’s climatic and soil conditions. As a result, were released some new vegetative rootstocks for peaches, cherries and for apricot. There are also under study some promising elites.
