ISHS Chestnut Working Group: new chairperson
Dear members of the Working Group,
It is my pleasure to inform you that I was elected as the next Chairman of the ISHS Chestnut Working Group, succeeding Prof. Umit Serdar on this grateful task.
First of all, I want to thank Prof. Umit Serdar for all he did to push this WG forward and for the great organization of the VI International Symposium on Chestnut which was very fruitful.
My election occurred during the International Symposium held in Samsun, Turkey, between 9th and 13th October 2017.
Concerning my professional activity, I'm a plant physiologist, researching on chestnut issues for 30 years in the University of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro (Portugal), stressing characterization of varieties and breeding and the improvement of chestnut resilience against diseases, drought and heat. Actually, I'm also the president of the RefCast- Portuguese Association of Chestnut (www.refcast.pt), which allow me to have a broader perspective of the whole chestnut chain. So, I promise you to continue the work in order to promote the rising of chestnut in the world as a multipurpose species, improving landscape and territorial cohesion. The nuts, also called unNuts, have been an important place on human feed since the past until nowadays.
Hope to meet with you soon.
