Unravelling the genomics of sucrose-associated sweetness in papaya
7 months 6 days ago

Usana Nantawan is a plant scientist and PhD candidate at Griffith University whose research is focused on molecular strategies for improving papaya fruit quality. Along with flavour, an important papaya fruit quality trait to preserve at point of sale is sweetness, and in particular sweetness that is derived from sucrose. This is directly regulated by a suite of genes involved in sucrose synthesis (ss) and it is unknown how the expression of these genes is affected during fruit maturation, presumably leading to differences in sweetness of the harvested fruit.

The relationship between nitrate accumulation and chlorophyll content in leafy vegetables
7 months 6 days ago

Melisa Kara is a PhD student at the Hatay Mustafa Kemal University, Faculty of Agriculture, Antakya- Hatay, Turkey. She is focusing on nitrate, nitrite accumulation and is examining the relationship between nitrate accumulation and chlorophyll content in leafy vegetables. Parsley (Petroselinum hortense Mill.) is a very important leafy vegetable. Antakya and Iskenderun are key districts in Turkey for leafy vegetable production and consumption. Greater accumulation of nitrates and nitrites in green leafy vegetables has been associated with negative effects on health, e.g.

I have spent my PhD examining the molecular regulation of adventitious rooting in avocado, under the supervision of Prof. Neena Mitter at the University of Queensland (UQ), Australia. My competitive nature and love for science has seen me achieve academic excellence throughout my undergraduate and postgraduate studies. During my Bachelor of Biotechnology at UQ, I received numerous Deans Commendations for High Achievement and obtained a cumulative GPA of 6.7.

Characterization and sensory analysis of some Tunisian date cultivars consumed at early maturity stage
7 months 6 days ago

In Tunisia, more than 200 common date palm cultivars (Phoenix dactylifera L.) are currently listed. Some of these cultivars are consumed at early maturity stage (Khalal) and are generally under-valued. The objective of this study was a physicochemical and sensorial characterization of eleven common date fruit cultivars that could be consumed at the Khalal stage. The studied cultivars presented different physical characteristics expressed for size, weight, skin color and firmness.

The Quiet Rescue of America's Forgotten Fruit
One man is responsible for roughly half of the country's stone fruit collection.

The epicenter of America's tech industry was once orchards as far as the eye can see. California's Silicon Valley, as it happens, used to be known as the Valley of Heart's Delight, a slogan that often accompanied illustrations of sunshine and fruit trees.
