Dear Members of the Commission Plant Genetic Resources - as the year 2014 has started I would like to give you an update of activities of the Commission in 2013 and our plans for the time ahead.
While Israeli growers certainly have their share of challenges, including high labor costs and water scarcity, they also have several things in their favor. The ISHS Secretariat will soon be initiating the procedure for the election of Section and Commission Chairs and Vice Chairs. During the next International Horticultural Congress (IHC2014, Brisbane, Australia, August 2014) those (re)elected will come into office for the next 4-year term: 2014-2018 (until the next IHC2018 in Istanbul, Turkey, 2018).
Both the election rounds as well as the preliminary nomination of candidates are reserved to ISHS members-only.
An outstanding group of fruit crop physiologists is retiring including (in alphabetical order) Ted DeJong, University of California-Davis; James Flore, Michigan State University; Duane Greene, University of Massachusetts; Alan Lakso, Cornell University; John Palmer, Plant and Food; and James Syvertsen, University of Florida.

The ISHS Workgroup Medicinal Plants and Natural Products is scheduling a strategic planning webinar to take place on Monday, December 16 2013 at 10:30am EST.
The purpose is to create a more productive strategy and plan of action for the Workgroup.
Focus will be on enhanced communication, collaboration and cooperation with members of the ISHS Section Medicinal and Aromatic Plants.

The IHC2014 mascot has a name!
The Organizing Committee of the 2014 International Horticultural Congress in Brisbane Australia (IHC2014) announced they received some excellent suggestions as a name for the IHC2014 mascot and they are pleased to announce they've picked one! The favourite name came from Vera Sergeeva and the little koala will now be called "HortiKoala"!
ISHS has the pleasure to announce the launch of a new Working Group on Pecan and other Carya within the ISHS Section Nuts and Mediterranean Climate Fruits.
The next International Horticultural Congress (IHC2014) will be held in Brisbane, Australia (17-22 August 2014).
As in past Congresses, significant scientific events have been included within the IHC2014 programme.
An important International Symposium entitled Innovation and New Technologies in Protected Cultivation has already been planned and detailed organisation is under way.

The Institute of Horticulture (IoH) announced that Her Majesty the Queen (UK) has been graciously pleased to grant a Royal Charter to the IoH.

APA 2013: The African Potato Association (APA) in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture, Kenya, the National Potato Council of Kenya, and the International Potato Center are hosting the Ninth Triennial African Potato Association (APA) conference, which will be held at the Great Rift Valley Lodge in Naivasha, Kenya from the 30th of June through to the 4th of July 2013.
The meeting will have 3 specific objectives:
Abstract submissions for IHC2014 are now open. Authors are able to submit their abstracts online via the IHC2014 website. Submissions will close in November 2013 and accepted abstracts will be published on a Congress USB stick which registered delegates will receive onsite.
