Plants perform complex mathematical equations throughout the night to prevent starvation until they can feed at sunrise; scientists at the John Innes Centre in Norfolk (UK) have discovered plants 'count' their starch and divide it by the number of hours of darkness to ensure the right levels are used.

She is feeding her family of 11 in Sudan with the nutritious vegetables she grows at home in Kulbus, West Darfur—in a 6-foot diameter plot called a keyhole garden. Darou Abdulmalik feeds her family of 11 with the nutritious vegetables she grows in her keyhole garden next to the family home in West Darfur, Sudan. "Since I built my keyhole garden in April, I have harvested 15 times," Darou says.

CABI is a not-for-profit science-based development and information organization. As part of its development plans for horticulture, CABI is carrying out a 10-15 minutes survey of current information needs and uses in horticulture. The goal of the survey is 'to develop new or better products for horticulturists worldwide'. CABI is calling upon ISHS members' views on what sort of information and tools they find useful.

Unseasonably cold weather may have some Florida blueberry growers frustrated, but frost will not prevent the U.S. state from having a peak production year. Florida Blueberry Growers Association president Bill Braswell explained that despite a serious cold snap right before harvest time, Florida is in for a strong year. "For total output, we're probably going to have a record year but that's going to be because we have so many more acres on the ground. We had enough chill to set a decent crop. We're going to have a good season," he said.
