Mark your calendars! The 2nd ISHS International Symposium on Plant Cryopreservation will be held August 11-14, 2013 in Fort Collins, Colorado, USA. All scientists and professionals interested in cryobiology or ex situ plant preservation are invited to attend. The symposium will include in depth analyses of basic research in the cryobiology of living cells as well as reports on state-of-the-art methods, research and successes with cryopreservation of selected horticultural and agricultural crops.
Seeds in space sprout pretty much the same way they do here on Earth, even without gravity, new research shows. In a study published in the current issue of the journal BMC Plant Biology [1], researchers report for the first time that without gravity, roots display normal movements used to get around rocks and other obstacles. The movements, known as waving and skewing, were thought to be due to gravity pulling on roots as they sample their growing surface with touch, says Anna-Lisa Paul, a horticultural sciences research associate professor at the University of Florida and one of the study
