Abstract
Descriptor lists and inventories are vital tools as part of the conservation and effective utilization of fruit genetic resources.
Increased effort is needed on the utilization aspects of fruit genetic resources since effort on conservation is wasted unless there are effective means of using these resources in breeding.
A European Genetic Resources Programme combining the activities now carried out separately by the EEC (and other regional groups), the ECP, and IBPGR (in Europe) is proposed for the benefit of Europe and as a channel for mutual co-operation with the Developing World.
