A variety of commercially-available lilies (Lilium spp. and hybrids) were grown in field plots from 2008-2011 to evaluate their susceptibility to the disease Botrytis leaf spot and blight (Botrytis elliptica). Each cultivar was evaluated at flowering 2009-2011 for its susceptibility to Botrytis blight. During the relatively dry spring of 2010, disease pressure was minimal and foliar blight was less than 10% for all cultivars, so that there were no significant differences in symptom severity between lilies. However, during 2009 and 2011, abundant rain the month before flowering resulted in heavy disease pressure. In 2009, the most severely affected cultivars (70-94% spotted or scorched leaves) were ‘Chianti’, ‘Connecticut King’, ‘Côte d’Azur’, ‘Gironde’, ‘L. tigrinum – Pink’, ‘Menorca’, ‘Red Alert’, ‘Royal Fantasy’, ‘Sweet Kiss’, ‘Vermeer’ and ‘White Heaven’. Plants with less than 21% symptomatic leaves in 2009 were ‘African Queen’, ‘Casa Blanca’, ‘Cobra’, ‘Conca d’Or’, ‘Le Rêve’, ‘Mozart Zanlazart’, ‘Sorbonne’ and ‘Time Out’. The most severely affected in 2011 (70-100% symptomatic leaves) were ‘Chianti’, ‘Connecticut King’, ‘Cote d’Azur’, ‘Gironde’, ‘Red Alert’, ‘Lilium tigrinum – Pink, ‘White Heaven’, and ‘Yellow Star’. The least symptomatic foliage in 2011 (less than 19% symptomatic leaves) was seen on ‘African Queen’, ‘Casa Blanca’, ‘Cobra’, ‘Conca d’Or’, ‘Le Rêve’, Lilium speciosum var. rubrum, ‘Mozart Zanlazart’, Lilium regale, ‘Sorbonne’, ‘Tiara’ and ‘Time Out’. Botrytis blight can be a very destructive disease for growers of cut flower lilies; by gathering information on genotypic resistance and making it available to growers, resistant and superior cultivars can be grown for commercial purposes or in private or public gardens, resulting in less loss from the disease and less reliance on fungicide applications.
