Abstract
Temperate zone fruits can be classified into three groups by their growth habit, tree fruits, vine fruits, and small fruits.
Although many species of temperate zone fruits can be grown in Indonesia, the three most commercially grown fruits are: apple (Malus × domestica), grape (Vitis vinifera) and strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa). The production centers for apple in Indonesia are: Batu, Malang and Pasuruan (East Java). These centres are approximately 1,000 to 1,200 m a.s.l.
The four major apple cultivars commercially grown are: Rome Beauty, Anna, Manalagi and Hwang Lin. Commercial apple production has started around 1970 and peak from 1980 to the mid 1990s.
Production and productivity then declined because of: a) land-used conversion into non-agriculture, b) ornamental farming, c) reduction in land fertility, d) climate changing or global warming effects.
Grapes are mostly grown in Kediri, Probolinggo, Pasuruan, Situbondo (East Java), Buleleng (Bali), Palu (Central Sulawesi) and Kupang (East Nusa Tenggara). The major grape cultivars grown in Indonesia are: Isabella, Probolinggo Biru 81, Probolinggo Super, Kediri Kuning, and Bali. Grapesare grown using a pergola trellis system.
Strawberry is grown in the highlands of Garut, Cianjur, Sukabumi, Cipanas, Bandung (West Java), Karanganyar (Central Java), Malang (East Java), Buleleng (Bali), and Lombok (East Nusa Tenggara). The major strawberry cultivars grown in Indonesia are Michico, Selva, Holland, California, Karumai, Sweet Charlie, and Nyohou. Apple and strawberry are grown not only for fresh fruit but also for agrotourism called pick it yourself or u-pick farm, or for processing into juice, jamand chips.
