Abstract
The annual total fruit production of Hungary is close to 1.5 million tons, of which approximately 60% is apples (Table 1). The production of commercial orchards runs to about 600,000 tons, while about 900,000 tons of fruits are produced on a much smaller scale, in backyards and orchards smaller than 3000 m2.
The production of sour cherry has been the most successful branch of Hungarian fruit growing during the last twenty years.
The trends in Hungarian sour cherry production are shown in Figure 1. A sudden increase in the national sour cherry yield occurred in 1981 when the plantations established in the 1970s reached bearing.
The highest yield of 90,000 tons was recorded in 1989, while even in the worst years for frost damage, yields surpassed 50,000 tons.
The total area of commercial sour cherry orchards in Hungary is about 5500 ha.
