Abstract
Romania produces an average of 50,000 tons of tart cherries per year from a total of 5500 ha of commercial orchards and about 3 million individual trees in home gardens.
Cherry production per hectare is not high because this figure includes trees which are just beginning to bear.
In the last seven years, 4.2 million grafted trees were produced.
Most were planted in new home gardens for domestic consumption and were not well-managed.
According to statistical data, most commercial cherry production is in the districts of the Carpathian hilly area.

The cherry processing industry produces compotes, jams, juice and syrup, mostly for the domestic market.
Other products, such as candies, cakes, liqueurs, and cocktails that include other fruits, are also produced in small quantities, especially by the domestic processing industry.
Only about 20% of the sour cherry crop is exported as fresh fruit and processed products.
Early ripening Duke-type varieties, with fruit of a prevalently sweet taste and good eating quality, represent less than 10% of cherry production, and are sold on the fresh market.
